Printer Smudges or Repeated Ghost Images
Engineering preview: usable draft patterns, not a physically validated release. See validation limits.
Fresh ink smears, toner that does not adhere and repeated images need different checks. Start with suitable dry paper and matching media settings, then compare the printer’s internal report. A repeated distance is evidence to share with support, not a part diagnosis.
No authenticated fault photographs or physical repair validation have been provided. These are cautious checks, not a confirmed repair diagnosis.

Separate the visible patterns
- Fresh ink smears or duplex transfer
- Repeated images or periodic spots
30-second checks
- Use fresh, flat paper within the model’s specifications.
- Match media settings and check the printable side.
- Note whether the mark smears, repeats or appears only after duplexing.
Match your printer type
inkjet
Let ink set according to the paper and printer instructions before touching, stacking or feeding a sheet again. Pigment ink on unsuitable media may remain on the surface. Follow only the model’s user-accessible paper-path instructions.
laser
Media, toner, a drum or the fuser can produce similar defects. Try suitable paper and media settings first; show persistent internal-report defects to official support. Do not dismantle or touch hot or high-voltage assemblies.
unknown
Identify ink versus toner before trying maintenance. Do not rub, refeed or keep printing a visibly contaminated sheet.
These are checks to investigate, not a diagnosis or a probability of failure. Model-specific maintenance and physical sample validation are still required.

Identify the printer before maintenance
First check: Look up the model's official manual to establish whether it uses ink cartridges, refillable ink tanks or toner. Do not guess a cleaning procedure.
Look for: Separate fresh ink smears from an image repeated farther down the sheet or spots recurring at similar distances. Repeated marks alone cannot identify a drum, roller or fuser.
Verify: Print / PDF: Black & white. Choose the paper loaded in your printer.
Stop: Stop if the printer reports an error or an unsafe condition. If the allowed procedure does not help, find official model instructions.
Paper condition and media selection
First check: Load fresh, dry, flat paper within the exact model’s specifications. Set the correct media type, printable side and guides without bending the sheet. Match the page size in the file, print dialog and loaded tray before comparing a new sample.
Look for: See whether marks or soft edges change on suitable paper. A consistent offset or repeated mark on the internal report still needs the model’s quality instructions.
Verify: Print / PDF: Black & white. Choose the paper loaded in your printer.
Stop: Stop for a printer error or an unsafe condition. If the permitted model-specific check does not help, use official support; do not keep repeating tests or replace parts from this page alone. Paper, quality or color settings
First check: Compare the loaded paper with the selected paper type, turn off draft/economy mode for the test, and check that color is enabled when needed.

Before you print again
Does requesting a print mean it printed?
No. The browser can request a dialog, but cannot tell whether you cancelled, sent the job or received paper. Check the preview and the physical result.
Why are there two paper sizes?
Each PDF has a native Letter or A4 page box. Choose the same size in the printer dialog, use Actual size / 100%, and disable headers, footers and Fit to page.
Can this sheet diagnose my printer?
It is a comparison aid. A generic sheet cannot identify a failed part, measure ink remaining, certify colors or replace the manufacturer's model-specific checks.
