Is my ink really empty?
Engineering preview: usable draft patterns, not a physically validated release. See validation limits.
A low-ink estimate, an empty-ink error, an unrecognized cartridge and a subscription message are different observations. First read the exact message. A test sheet cannot measure liquid remaining or prove that a warning is false.
1. What the level indicator can tell you
Model designs differ: some track estimated consumption or cartridge status, while a tank window lets you visually inspect liquid. Epson ET-2840 / L3560 explicitly estimates usage rather than directly measuring the tank. Canon G3010 directs a visual level check. Do not assume every indicator is a physical sensor or that every cartridge uses the same counter.

2. Why the first supply can appear to fall quickly
A new printer can move ink into its internal delivery system during initial use. Canon’s G3010 manual explains this initial movement. Included supplies and replacement supplies can have different model-specific purposes and yields; read the exact manual rather than assuming a universal starter capacity.

If your new HP printer or replacement print head came with SETUP cartridges, its first initialization needs those supplied cartridges. Keep the original SETUP cartridges in use until empty, then install compatible regular replacements. Do not install new unused SETUP cartridges after initialization. If the required supplied cartridges are missing, contact HP. This does not mean every HP model requires SETUP, and no universal capacity or depletion time is claimed.

3. Compare one known color, then read the result
Use the smaller single-color pattern, not a high-coverage purge page. A driver may mix multiple physical inks to render the chosen artwork color. For individual nozzle or cartridge assessment, use the model’s official report.

Choose Actual size / 100%, the matching paper size, and turn off headers and footers. Do not select Fit to page or borderless enlargement.

Pattern preview
| Printed observation | What it may mean | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The chosen color looks complete | The selected artwork printed on this attempt. It does not measure remaining ink or prove that a cartridge-level warning is false. | Read the model’s low-ink message and keep a suitable replacement ready; do not clean solely because of a low estimate. |
| The color is pale or uneven | Paper, economy mode, print-quality settings, ink delivery or a supply problem can produce a pale result. The page cannot distinguish them alone. | Match paper and quality settings, then compare with the official print-quality report. |
| Lines or patches have gaps | Gaps suggest a quality problem. They do not establish an empty cartridge or identify a specific blocked nozzle. | Use the built-in nozzle check for an inkjet. Clean only if its manual recommends it, then recheck within model limits. |
| The chosen color is absent | Missing output can involve settings, cartridge recognition, supply, subscription status or ink delivery. This is not a confirmed empty-ink diagnosis. | Read the exact error message and verify model-compatible supplies and account status. Follow the missing-color guide and official report. |
4. If the cartridge is not recognized
Check the exact model, compatible cartridge number, region and the wording of the error in the manufacturer’s manual. Recognition is separate from estimated liquid volume.
For the DeskJet 2700 example, HP’s manual permits checking protective tape and reseating the indicated cartridge; its contact-cleaning procedure is model-specific. Follow that manual, not a generic contact-scrubbing instruction.
Subscription status and HP+ requirements must be checked separately. A third-party chip or incompatible regional supply can involve compatibility policies; confirm with official support rather than inferring a chip defect from this page.
Do not downgrade firmware, modify chips, reset waste-ink counters or bypass cartridge/account restrictions. If the allowed model procedure fails, contact support.

Before you print again
Does requesting a print mean it printed?
No. The browser can request a dialog, but cannot tell whether you cancelled, sent the job or received paper. Check the preview and the physical result.
Why are there two paper sizes?
Each PDF has a native Letter or A4 page box. Choose the same size in the printer dialog, use Actual size / 100%, and disable headers, footers and Fit to page.
Can this sheet diagnose my printer?
It is a comparison aid. A generic sheet cannot identify a failed part, measure ink remaining, certify colors or replace the manufacturer's model-specific checks.
