Test Page Works but My Document Does Not Print

Engineering preview: usable draft patterns, not a physically validated release. See validation limits.

A working internal report does not test the whole computer-to-printer path. Compare a simple document, check the selected printer and queue, and match the document, tray and driver paper sizes. Investigate the file and supported driver before assuming hardware damage.

No authenticated fault photographs or physical repair validation have been provided. These are cautious checks, not a confirmed repair diagnosis.

Separate the visible patterns

  • One file fails but another file prints
  • Job stalls, requests paper or jams

30-second checks

  • Compare one simple text file with one affected page.
  • Read the selected physical printer’s queue and error messages.
  • Match page size, paper source and supported driver.

Match your printer type

inkjet

If its internal report is good, do not start ink cleaning to fix a file or queue failure. Use the supported driver and model-specific paper/connection instructions.

laser

Only compare PCL or PostScript drivers when the exact model and operating system support them. Unsupported print languages can give errors or missing content; a good internal report alone does not validate the driver.

unknown

File preview, queue status and paper-size checks do not require guessing the technology. Find the model before choosing drivers or maintenance.

These are checks to investigate, not a diagnosis or a probability of failure. Model-specific maintenance and physical sample validation are still required.

Based on: unknown · Test page OK but my documents fail

  1. Identify the printer before maintenance

First check: Look up the model's official manual to establish whether it uses ink cartridges, refillable ink tanks or toner. Do not guess a cleaning procedure.

Look for: Compare a simple text file, the affected page and the printer’s internal report. Note a queued error, missing characters, a paper-size prompt or a jam without assuming hardware failure.

Verify: Print / PDF: Black & white. Choose the paper loaded in your printer.

Stop: Stop if the printer reports an error or an unsafe condition. If the allowed procedure does not help, find official model instructions.

  2. Isolate the file, fonts or image processing

First check: Print one simple text file and compare one affected page. Inspect the preview, page range and missing fonts/images; reopen a fresh local copy. For a PDF that fails only in Acrobat/Reader, its supported Print as Image option is a comparison for font/image processing, with a possible loss of edge sharpness.

Look for: If another file prints, investigate the affected document or viewer. If all computer jobs fail while the internal report works, compare the queue, connection, paper and supported driver.

Verify: Print / PDF: Text & grayscale. Choose the paper loaded in your printer.

Stop: Stop for a printer error or an unsafe condition. If the permitted model-specific check does not help, use official support; do not keep repeating tests or replace parts from this page alone. Stop if the printer reports an error or an unsafe condition. If the allowed procedure does not help, find official model instructions.

  3. Selected printer, queue and paper/tray mismatch

First check: Select the intended physical printer and read its queue/error state. Match the document page size, print-dialog size, loaded paper and selected tray; a mismatch may pause the job or cause a feed error. If a job is stuck, use your system’s official queue instructions for your own job; do not delete others’ shared jobs.

Look for: Compare whether the simple text job reaches the intended queue and note a paused/offline state, a size prompt or the exact feed error. An internal test bypasses some of this path.

Verify: Print / PDF: Text & grayscale. Choose the paper loaded in your printer.

Stop: Stop retrying a job that jams or reports a stop error. Clear paper only using the exact model’s safe jam instructions and use official support if it repeats; do not force or reach into hot parts. Stop if the printer reports an error or an unsafe condition. If the allowed procedure does not help, find official model instructions.

Still unresolved after the manufacturer’s allowed procedure? Stop repeating cleaning cycles and contact official support. Do not replace parts based only on this page.

Before you print again

Does requesting a print mean it printed?

No. The browser can request a dialog, but cannot tell whether you cancelled, sent the job or received paper. Check the preview and the physical result.

Why are there two paper sizes?

Each PDF has a native Letter or A4 page box. Choose the same size in the printer dialog, use Actual size / 100%, and disable headers, footers and Fit to page.

Can this sheet diagnose my printer?

It is a comparison aid. A generic sheet cannot identify a failed part, measure ink remaining, certify colors or replace the manufacturer's model-specific checks.
